We really didn't know that there was another reef than the great barrier reef in Australia and were surprised to find the Ningaloo Reef in the north western part of the continent. The difference between the two reefs lies in the distance which you have to cover to see the reefs. The Ningaloo Reef is ideal for snorchelling because on many parts it is only a few meters off shore whereas the great barrier reef is miles out in the open sea.
Firstly we didn't plan to go snorchelling but to see the reef from the safty of a boat. We booked a tour on a glassbottom-boat to see the corals without getting wet. What we didn't know was that we could go snorchelling from this boat in one of the most interesting parts of the Ningaloo Reef and with a good friendly supervision how to use all the gear involved. After I got over my panic as I realised what's all swimming in this water it was absolutely fantastic!
After the fantastic tour in the early morning we thought that a small hike would be great. The distance to cover on this hike wasn't much (3km) but it was the heat that was almost unbearable. It was, I have to admit, a bit foolish to go hiking in the middle of the day after spending the morning in the cool sea. But it was once more worth it for the spectacular view.
We spent the rest of the day mostly in and around the clear blue waters. There were so many nice little bays with this turquoise water... Only sting rays and stonefishes kept us out of the water...after all this travelling we finally want to go home...
Momentarely there is a jellyfish-invasion on many of those beaches. We were told that they are harmless and certainly not as dangerous as a box jellyfish but we decided to stay out where there were lots of those red-brown jellyfishes. You never know...
We were told that there is an other invasion of a different kind on this coast as soon as Easter arrives. Many parts of Australia have school holidays after Easter and soon the places along the coast will be swarmed by hundreds of tourist. That is the time when we'll have moved on to the Karijini NP and after that we're heading again south.
